To introduce design course directors, from fashion/clothing and textiles, product/industrial, furniture/interior/architecture/automotive, to the range of smart materials in the public domain, as well as forecasts for the future. To brainstorm how these materials can be integrated into the curriculum, e.g., through industrially-sponsored projects (to find new applications for existing technologies, or projecting into future needs), joint design-materials course programmes or modules, etc.

Format
Presentations | smart materials overviews (what is in the public domain) and forecasts for the future scientific/tech priorities.

Speakers
Alan Smith, MNT Network: Things you never knew were Smart!
Laura Jones, QinetiQ: Introduction to Solid State Sensors and Actuators
David Lussey, Peratech: Flexible Technology
Stephen Coulson, P2i: Ion Mask ™ enhancement of products for water and oil repellence

Smart Materials Bazaar | a collection of materials, toys, gadgets, products and prototypes, with which design course directors can ‘play’, arranged into thematic groups, e.g., sensors, actuators, colour-change, light-emitting, etc.

Brainstorm discussions | around integrating smart materials into the design curriculum; a discussion around each design discipline with some or all of the thematic groups of materials.
